Wellness Tool for Coaches

There is a new wellness tool available in South Africa – The Wellness Inventory − designed to meet our society’s current wellness needs. Martin Combrinck looks at why it is a must for your Coaching toolbox.

The Wellness Inventory is a ‘whole person’ assessment and lifestyle programme designed to help you gain personal insight into your state of physical, emotional, and spiritual wellness. The programme offers guidance and tools to transform this new awareness into lasting changes in your life, and a renewed sense of health and wellbeing.

The programme revolves around assessment in the 12 dimensions of wellness according to Dr. Travis’ Wellness Energy System (see the diagram below). The assessment is educational in nature and helps to create awareness of how your lifestyle, attitudes and behaviour influence your state of health and wellbeing. Read more...

Laughter Seminar & Show

Laughter for Africa, is hosting a public laughter seminar and show on the 25 May 2010 at 6 pm at Old Mill Theatre in Paarl. This is part of the 'Let's get the Nation Laughing Campaign'. The aim of this campaign is to educated people about the benefits of laughter for yourself and the community.

The seminar is to show people that you can laugh without using comedy, jokes and humour - all that is needed is a willingness to laugh. Scientific studies have shown that children up to the age of 8 years - laugh an average of about 300 times a day. This is because they laugh with their bodies and not their minds. Adults on the other hand, laugh on average only about 10 times a day, because they laugh with their minds. During this laughter seminar, we become like children again and we laugh for no reason at all.

This concept originated in 1995 with Dr Madan Kataria from Mumbai, India. Since then, this phenomenon called Laughter Yoga, has spread to more that 65 countries world-wide. This laughter seminar is presented by Martin Combrinck, international certified Laughter Professional. Part of this presentation is a laughter theatre show, by two well-known actors, Bennie Jacobs and Redione Stephens from 'Lollos' fame -  http://www.laughter4africa.org.za/events.htm

The human body often reacts to various situations, thoughts and emotions with a physiological or psychological response. This may result in positive ‘stress’ – a feeling of happiness and satisfaction and well-being in the body or negative stress such as overwhelm, anger, sadness, or any other negative emotion, which can result in a brief illness or serious disease.

Today we have more stress in our lives than ever before – both good stress and bad stress. Bad stress is incredibly harmful to our body, mind and soul; whether it is a real crisis or an imagined one. Here are some self-care ways to deal with stress: For more information - sangawellness.com

Laughter is No Joke

Laughter yoga is no joke. Recent studies show that laughter is, after all, the best medicine.

Studies have shown that laughter reduces stress, lifts your mood and is a powerful antidote to depression and anxiety. It also has some physical advantages – it’s been known to boost your immune system and to help to control blood pressure, to name a few.

"The act of vigorous laughter energises our physiology in much the same way that aerobic exercise does, increasing heart and respiration rate and activating various muscle groups. After an episode of laughter, however, our bodies enjoy a relaxation effect," reports a US study on Workplace Laughter and Personal Efficacy by Beckman, Regier and Young. The study findings were published in The Journal of Primary Prevention.

It all sounds good and well, you might say, but in between deadlines, traffic jams, mortgage payments and escalating crime rates it’s not that easy to find something to laugh about.

World Laughter Day: 2 May 2010

Message for World Laughter Day - 2 May 2010

2nd of May 2010 is World Laughter Day – a very special day celebrated worldwide on the first Sunday of every May. Our mission is to bring Good Health, Joy and World Peace through laughter. The way Laughter Yoga has grown across 65 countries without marketing and advertising leaves me with no doubt that this new concept is widely accepted among different cultures and countries and is truly universal.

Everyone knows laughter is good for health, but what kind of laughter is beneficial. Science tells us that laughter is beneficial only if it is sustained and when we laugh longer at least for 10 -15 minutes. There is no way we can laugh that long naturally in our real life. Since laughter in Laughter Yoga is done in the form of an exercise, we can laugh as long as we want to get the guaranteed benefits of laughter. Secondly, in this high pressure, high tension modern world, there are not many reasons that makes us laugh. Therefore, we need to disconnect our laughter from reasons of life and laugh unconditionally without any reason.

While many are getting the health benefits and changing their quality of life, the question is how do we actually bring world peace through laughter? The formula is simple - When you laugh; you change and when you change the world changes around you.

By multiplying Laughter clubs, we are building a worldwide community of like-minded people who believe in common shared values of unconditional love and laughter. It will cultivate ideals based on goodness, generosity, forgiveness, truthfulness and honesty. Read more...
